  5. The Beta 7 version of NCSA Mosaic for the Macintosh 2.0 was 
  6. released Thursday April 27, 1995.
  7.  
  8. This is a BETA release, therefore there are many new features or 
  9. bugs that you will need to be aware of to make your use of the new 
  10. release a pleasant experience.  You may encounter problems that 
  11. will cause your machine to crash. You may not find certain aspects 
  12. of the program aesthetically pleasing.
  13.  
  14. We will continue to keep the comprehensive Known Bugs page as up-
  15. to-date as possible .  To help us do this, please email us with any 
  16. problems you find that are not related to those listed on the known 
  17. bugs page.  Use the Mail Developers feature from the File menu, or 
  18. email to mosaic-mac@ncsa.uiuc.edu.   Note:  Please check that the 
  19. email address is correct before sending mail via the Mail Developers

  26. NCSA Mosaic is available via anonymous ftp.  Please enter 
  27. 'anonymous' as the name and your complete email address as the 
  28. password.

  33. The NCSA ftp server is being overloaded with requests for the Mosaic
  34. software. Because of this, you may get an error message.  Please wait

  55. DECOMPRESSING THE ARCHIVE

  58. To UnStuff & UnBinHex NCSA Mosaic we recommend that you use
  59. StuffIt Expander.  The expander is available at ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu  
  60. in the /Mosaic/Mac/Helpers/ directory.

  62. Important Note
  63.  
  64. Some people are having problems starting up MacMosaic. If MacMosaic
  65. crashes before the splash screen is displayed, it is possible that there
  66. is a problem with your system. We now know that when the Apple Shared 
  67. Library Manager(ASLM) is deinstalled improperly, when any application asks
  68. the MacOS if ASLM is present, the system will crash.  To deinstall the ASLM
  69. run the ASLM installer.  Hold the option key down and the install button
  70. should change to a deinstall button.  Click the deinstall button.

  72. It is possible that this problem may exist with other MacOS
  73. extensions that require an installer. If MacMosaic won't start
  74. up on your machine, we recommend that you reinstall the system.

  77. Current Known Problems
  78. *****************************************************
  79.     
  80.     The cache files used by the 68K are different from those
  81.         used by the PowerMacs. Therefore, running a PowerMac
  82.         version on a machine with 68K cache files will cause
  83.         strangeness.
  84.     "View Source" will not work with documents extracted 
  85.         from cache.  "Reload" the document, then "View Source"
  86.         will become available.
  87.     Sometimes the menu bar gets messed up when you start up
  88.         the PowerMac version.
  89.     Any edit text may not show the text to be selected, even
  90.         though it is.  This problem ONLY exists on PowerMacs.
  91.     Copy and Paste may still have some problems.
  92.     When a document is downloading, clicking on a link should
  93.         cancel the current load and start a new one.
  94.     Only one history popup menu is available for all windows.
  95.         Each window will have the same popup, but not all
  96.         entries will be valid.  You will get an error message
  97.         if you select a popup that isn't valid.
  98.     The align attributes for HTML paragraph tag is not yet
  99.         supported.
  100.     FTP seems to have an intermittent problem. When it fails
  101.         it will occasionally crash.

  107.     Anchor naming is correct now.
  108.     GURL is supported, but still seems to not work
  109.         properly in some cases.
  110.     Problems with with the CENTER tag and IMG align
  111.         left and align right are fixed.
  112.     PREformated text has been fixed, as has PLAINTEXT.
  113.     Find is two orders of magnitude faster.  But occasionally
  114.         the selection get messed up.  Usually when the
  115.         application has to scroll to show the new found
  116.         selection.  Just force the window to redraw when
  117.         this occurs.
  118.     Annotations have been fixed.  Various bugs have
  119.         been removed and reworked.

  125.     HTML Parser is much faster.
  126.     Named anchor jumps in docs on local machines now works
  127.         properly.
  128.     Mailto URLs now work better, and more consistently.
  129.     The status icons in the upper left of the window now
  130.         reflect much more information. When a connection
  131.         is being established, the globe wires display
  132.         marching arrows, the yellow ball is displayed a
  133.         a distance down the wire porportional to the 
  134.         percentage of the load that is completed, and 
  135.         the icon indicating pagination shows the portion
  136.         of the doc that is completely paginated.
  137.     View source now saves properly.
  138.     The CENTER tag is supported.
  139.     Additional HTML 3.0 support was added:
  140.         Image align=left and align=right are supported.
  141.         BIG and SMALL tags are supported.
  142.     Carriage returns are mapped to carriage return/line
  143.         feed in multiline form fields.
  144.     A potential crashing bug that could occur when 
  145.         checking the mod date of a cached document
  146.         is fixed.

  200.     Mosaic would crash sometimes if you moved off a page while it was
  201.         still paginating, and then returned to it.
  202.     Extracting tables from cache now works.
  203.     Loading XBMs under certain circumstances previously could 
  204.         cause problems. It's fixed.
  205.     Some probems with backgound colors have been fixed.
  206.     It was previously possible to submit a form several times before the
  207.         first submission was processed. This would cause a crash.
  208.     Another problem with interrupting downloads has been fixed.

  223.     NCSA Mosaic now supports the mailto: tag.  A mail server for the
  224.     user must be set in the "Preferences", under "Gates" before this
  225.     feature is accessible.

  229.     A local disk caching feature has been implemented.  NCSA Mosaic will
  230.     now retain copies of recently accessed documents to decrease the
  231.     amount of time spent accessing the network.  There is also a "Cache"
  232.     section in the "Preferences...".  Caching preferences should be set
  233.     soon after starting this version of NCSA Mosaic.  If this is not
  234.     done, NCSA Mosaic will default to the System Folder as its cache
  235.     directory resulting in a large number of cache files being saved
  236.     to the System Folder.
